About the Department

The department and the was created in 2014 simultaneously with the Faculty of Computer Science. The Department includes a Joint Department with Yandex, which provides great support to the entire faculty.

Since the foundation until September 1, 2015, Dmitry Vetrov, PhD, lecturer at Yandex School of Data Analysis, was the head of the department. On September 1, 2015, Vladimir Podolsky, PhD, associate professor of the Department, senior researcher at Steklov Mathematical Institute, became the head of the department. And on September 1, 2022, Evgeny Sokolov, associate professor of the Department, academic supervisor of the Continuing Education Centre, academic supervisor of the educational programme «‎Applied Mathematics and Information Science»‎ became the head of the department.

The department is centered around research groups, leading world-class research in the field of machine learning, theoretical computer science, distributed computing, scalable algorithms for big data processing, computer vision, text processing, information retrieval and graphical models. Department staff members regularly participate in prestigious international IT conferences.

There are internship opportunities for students and graduate students both in Russian and foreign IT companies (Yandex, Kaspersky Lab, Google, ABBYY, Microsoft), and in leading research groups of world universities (ETH Zurich, MIT, EPFL Lausanne, etc). Department staff together with Yandex School of Data Analysis have created a specialization “Analysis of Internet Data” for the master's program “Data Science”. Also, they developed the bachelor's program “Applied Mathematics and Computer Science”.
